Elon Musk challenges Big Coal to go toe-to-toe with 0 subsidies after being called a fraud

Now that Tesla is venturing further into the energy industry by ramping up its energy storage division, Tesla Energy', and with solar through its proposed merger with SolarCity, the company is not just causing troubles to established automakers and big oil, but also traditional energy companies like coal mining corporations.
This morning it became clear that Tesla is not welcomed by those companies when Robert Murray, a climate-change denier and CEO of Murray Energy Corporation, one of the biggest coal mining firms in the US, called Tesla a "fraud" for receiving subsidies without turning a profit.
Tesla CEO Elon Musk fired back at Murray saying that the "real fraud going on is denial of climate science" and he suggested that Murray's own company was profiting from subsidies and that they should both try to compete without any

SpaceX

Shotwell says SpaceX "homing in" on cause of Falcon 9 pad explosion

SpaceX is getting closer to finding the cause of a September pad explosion that destroyed a Falcon 9, and the company's president remains confident the vehicle will return to flight later this year. Because it is not a design issue, Shotwell remained confident that the Falcon 9 can resume launches later this year. "Hopefully we'll recover from this and be back flying a couple times this year," she said.
Shotwell's speech at the meeting was billed as a talk about the company's Mars exploration plans as an example of a "mega-engineering" initiative. It was, rather, more of an overview of SpaceX's overall activities, including efforts to make its Falcon 9 reusable, with only a brief mention at the end of the Mars transportation architecture SpaceX Chief Executive Elon Musk unveiled Sept. 27 at the International Astronautical Congress in Mexico.

Tesla

Elon Musk announces unexpected product unveiling Oct. 17th & Tesla SolarCity event Oct. 28

Elon Musk took to Twitter to announce an unexpected product launch event on October 17th, just a week away. He further noted that the expected Tesla/SolarCity announcement, which he previously hoped to hold at the end of the month, would indeed be on October 28th
We have heard a number of things about the SolarCity event which many expect to also mark the closing of the deal. As for the 17th event, we haven't heard specifics but can dip into speculation that the event will revolve around Autopilot, a hot topic of late. There could possibly be some Model 3 announcement updates which could include higher-end optional specs and perhaps a closer look at what the final, pencils down design will look like.

Tesla is about to increase its lead in semi-autonomous driving w/ 'Tesla Vision': computer vision based on NVIDIA's parallel computing

It's arguable, of course, but third-party tests have shown Tesla Autopilot outperforming other semi-autonomous or advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS) from Mercedes, Hyundai and Cadillac by a wide margin. That, and the fact that Tesla is gaining more real world data in its vehicles than anyone else would seem to indicate Tesla is a leader in the field, if not the leader.
Now we learn that Tesla could be about to significantly increase its lead with 'Tesla Vision'. Electrek has learned more details about the new program, which is an end-to-end computer vision system built with NVIDIA's CUDA, a parallel computing platform by the graphics processing unit (GPU) maker.

Tesla Autopilot Has Driven 222 Million Miles in the Past Year

If you add up the distance that Elon Musk's Teslas have traveled with the driver-assisting Autopilot technology enabled, it would be more than enough to travel to Mars and back twice.
On Friday — the same day that Tesla announced its cars have now traveled more than 3 billion miles — Musk shared the news on Twitter that Autopilot-powered Teslas have rolled some 222 million miles since the semi-autonomous technology's debut almost a year ago.

Tesla Says That Its Cars Traveled a Billion Miles in 6 Months

Twenty years from now, when gasoline-powered cars are only used in parades and period pieces, announcements like the one Tesla trumpeted on Friday — "Tesla drivers just passed 3 billion electric miles, saving the world 120M gallons of gas " — might seem a little twee. But today, it's big news.
And while three billion came very fast, four billion is going to come even sooner. The company marked one billion miles in June 2015 and passed the two billion mile mark in April, showing that the prevalence of the electric car company on the road is growing exponentially. If you consider the fact that the Tesla Model S didn't reach a billion road miles until 2015, or about three years after the car debuted, the growth in the past year seems pretty staggering.

Tesla (TSLA) and SolarCity (SCTY) 'will not need to raise equity or debt before the end of the year', says Musk

In a surprising follow-up after his announcement that Tesla will hold a product unveiling next week on the 17th, CEO Elon Musk said that Tesla nor SolarCity will need to raise equity or debt before the end of the year, and "probably not in Q1 2017 either". It's surprising because Tesla and Musk himself disclosed on two recent occasions that the automaker is about to raise capital.
He says that neither company will "need" to raise capital, but that doesn't mean that they won't since Tesla always retains the option to go to the public market if the conditions are good for the company to raise capital. It would certainly be playing with semantic, but it would still be an accurate comment.

Tesla is doubling the energy capacity of the Powerpack with new battery cells from the Gigafactory

Sources with knowledge of the Powerpack 2.0 program told Electrek that Tesla is preparing to launch a new generation of the battery pack, which has been referred to as 'Powerpack 2.0', toward the very end of the year. The new pack will make full use of the new 2170 cell format and sources say that it will double the energy capacity of the system.
While the current Powerpack is being advertised with a capacity of 100 kWh, sources say that the available energy is closer to 95 kWh and that the new Powerpack 2.0 will have a capacity of 200 kWh. The pack itself will stay roughly the same size, which is a good indication of the improved energy density.

Lawsuits are piling up against Tesla (TSLA) over the SolarCity (SCTY) merger, Tesla says 'without merit'

Last month, we reported that Tesla disclosed that it was fighting 4 different lawsuits from stockholders over the SolarCity merger alleging breached of fiduciary duties in connection with the proposed merger . We now learn that the number has gone up to 7 lawsuits against Tesla CEO Elon Musk ahead of a scheduled court hearing to consolidate the actions on October 14th. Tesla disclosed the lawsuits in an updated SEC filing on Friday and wrote that the company believes they are 'without merit'.
As previously reported, these kinds of lawsuits happen routinely after the price of a stock is affected negatively following a particular event. In this case, the proposed merger between Tesla and SolarCity. Both Tesla and SolarCity faced similar lawsuits in the past, but what is particularly interesting is that it could affect the merger in this case.

SolarCity

SolarCity CEO Lyndon Rive: Solar roof will boost business

Rive told Business Insider that "next year is going to be the big year for solar," because of the solar roof product the company plans to unveil October 28. "We should definitely increase forecasts for 2017," Rive said. "I think there will be high demand for solar combined with storage. Our solar roofing offering opens up a whole new market we haven't addressed before."

Elon Musk News

It took me over a month to hunt down an 87-year-old book Elon Musk recommended, and I'm glad I did

In July, Tesla and SpaceX CEO Elon Musk revealed that he was reading a largely forgotten 1929 bestseller: William Bolitho's "Twelve Against the Gods," an 87-year-old book dedicated to adventure and the memory of famous adventurers. As Bloomberg reported, copies of the book immediately were scarce. The work is currently available on Amazon for a not-at-all intimidating $575.
It's a good read for anyone who's interested in history or looking to find some motivation to switch things up and break the rules. Although, take everything with a grain of salt — don't get yourself so hyped up that you declare yourself a god and try to conquer everything from Greece to India.

SpaceX

SpaceX's Shotwell on Falcon 9 inquiry, discounts for reused rockets and Silicon Valley's test-and-fail ethos

SpaceX President Gwynne Shotwell on Oct. 5 said the company remains optimistic it will return to flight this year after the Sept. 1 explosion that destroyed a Falcon 9 rocket and its satellite payload in preparation for a static test fire.
Shotwell reiterated that the causes of a June 2015 Falcon 9 launch failure and the Sept. 1 incident appear to be unrelated and that the company is combing through data on operations as it searches for a root cause.
Addressing the APSCC 2016 conference, Shotwell also said Hawthorne, California-based SpaceX is offering a 10 percent discount to customers that agree to fly their payloads on reused Falcon 9 first stages.

SpaceX and its biggest competitors are waging a space battle on Capitol Hill

A space battle is being fought on Capitol Hill, and a fleet of rocket companies are using millions of lobbying dollars to wage it. The core struggle is between SpaceX, founded in 2002 by tech entrepreneur Elon Musk, and United Launch Alliance (ULA), which is jointly owned by aerospace giants Boeing and Lockheed Martin.
At stake is roughly $70 billion worth of Pentagon satellite launch contracts through 2030, plus what some members of Congress argue is the safety of future astronauts.

Humans will contaminate Mars with life — the question is how to do it right

If Elon Musk's Mars colony becomes a reality, he won't be sending just humans to the Red Planet; he'll be sending trillions of hitchhiking microbes as well. Such a biological invasion seemingly clashes with a concept known as planetary protection — avoiding the "harmful contamination" of other worlds. Given the likelihood of a human colony to spread microbes, does that put a stop to Musk's Mars ambitions?
Not exactly. A human settlement isn't incompatible with planetary protection. In fact, those who came up with the concept did so with future Mars settlements in mind. "It was fully recognized that humans could potentially colonize Mars in the future," Catherine Conley, NASA's planetary protection officer, tells The Verge.

Boeing's CEO Challenges SpaceX in Race to Mars

Boeing top dog Dennis Muilenburg just issued a public challenge to SpaceX CEO Elon Musk: On Tuesday, Muilenburg told an audience at The Atlantic's "What's Next?" conference that "the first person to step foot on Mars will arrive there riding on a Boeing rocket." That Boeing rocket would be NASA's Space Launch System. Musk, who last week presented SpaceX's plan to begin colonizing Mars within the next decade, would disagree. Much is at stake: Whoever wins will literally change humanity forever.

Tesla

Tesla joins Apple, Google and Coca-Cola in Top 100 list of best global brands

Tesla has entered, for the first time, Interbrand's Best Global Brands list as a company with the most customer influence and brand presence, joining the likes Apple, Google and Coca-Cola who head up the pack as top three. The brand consultancy agency, which has produced the report for the past 17 years, ranks major corporations based on the financial performance of their product and service offerings, their ability to influence customer choice, and whether the brand can command a premium price and secure earnings for the company.

Tesla Model 3 vs Chevy Bolt EV: GM says reservations holders will change their minds, but that's wishful thinking [Op-ed]

If you listen to the media and industry analysts, there's an ongoing battle between the Tesla Model 3 and the Chevy Bolt EV over market shares in the midsize electric vehicle segment. That's even before either car hits the market. I've already argued that it's a nonexistent battle but it feels like we need to clarify further.
Over a year ago, I wrote "GM is making a $37,500 car that would sell for $20,000 if it wasn't electric, while Tesla is trying to make a $35,000 car that would sell for $35,000 if it wasn't electric," and I still think it's true today now that we know more about both vehicles.

Does the Dealer Association seriously think Tesla is doing a disservice to buyers?

Tesla Motors filed suit in the US district court against Michigan state officials after having been rebuffed in its quest to sell cars directly to customers. The suit asks the court to declare that Michigan's franchise dealer law violates the due process and equal protection clauses of the Fourteenth Amendment to the U.S. Constitution as well as the Commerce Clause.
At the time the suit was filed, a spokesperson for the company said, "Solving this legislatively always has been and continues to be Tesla's preferred option. For the last two years, Tesla has pursued legislation in Michigan that is fair to everyone and that would benefit Michigan consumers."

Tesla vehicles to get a much-needed updated browser with new Linux OS in December, says Musk

Model S and X owners have been asking for an update to the browser for a long time and unfortunately, it didn't come with the recent 8.0 update, but Tesla CEO Elon Musk said yesterday that it will with an upcoming update, which will likely be in December.

Canada's Take on the Hyperloop Is 82 Feet Long and Has a Faux Sunroof

Gendron is the CEO of Transpod, a Toronto startup stepping into the Hyperloop game. While competitors like Hyperloop One and Hyperloop Transportation Technologies plan to develop the entire system, Transpod and its 30 employees concentrate only on the pod that will shoot through the tubes at 700 mph or more. "We're not designing an entire airplane here," he says.
Last month, at the InnoTrans trade show in Berlin, Gendron revealed what remains very much a concept of the Transpod. Renderings reveal a 10-ton vehicle 82 feet long, capable of carrying 10 tons of passengers or freight.

SolarCity

SolarCity's 'Solar Roof' is not a solar shingle but 'very similar' to Forward's solar roofing

A source with SolarCity's engineering group said that the product unveiled by Forward Labs through a Kickstarter campaign last month is of interest to SolarCity and its Zep Solar division, which manufactures the mounting equipment for the company's solar panels, because it is "very similar" to the solar roof product they are working on.
The source confirmed that the product is being developed in direct collaboration with Tesla. CEO Elon Musk said that Tesla was aiming to unveil the product by the end of October, presumably once the merger of the two companies will be completed. But several lawsuits from Tesla investors could push the shareholders vote and ultimately delay the merger.
