SpaceX on track to set record back-to-back Falcon 9 launches, 38 hours apart SpaceX's launch schedules have already solidified, but Elon Musk confirmed on Oct. 3 that the company is "aiming for two rocket landings in 48 hours this weekend". In fact, a brief examination of the schedules suggests that SpaceX could attempt those two launches and landings in as few as 38 hours, easily beating the company's previous launch cadence record of ~50 hours. The two missions planned for "this weekend" are SES-11 on Saturday evening and Iridium NEXT-3 bright and early on Monday, October 9. Mirroring an exciting period of rapid-fire launches earlier this summer, SpaceX will again attempt to conduct two launches from both the West and East coasts nearly simultaneously. Just like the launch of BulgariaSat-1 and Iridium NEXT-3 in late June, the two upcoming launches will make use of one "new" Falcon 9 and one that has been recovered and refurbished. SES-11 will lift off atop Falcon 9 1031, previously tasked with launching the CRS-10 Dragon, and will be the third commercial reuse of SpaceX's Falcon 9 first stage in 2017.

SpaceX urges White House to foster public-private partnerships in space Earlier this year, the White House announced plans to reestablish the National Space Council (NSC), an advising body that dates back to the creation of NASA in 1958. The council convened for the first time on October 5 and invited several central figures in US spaceflight, including SpaceX's President and COO Gwynne Shotwell. In a brief but powerful speech to the Council, Shotwell urged the US Federal government to apply the lessons learned from NASA's successful private-public partnerships to efforts to expand human presence in Low Earth Orbit and beyond. Those successful partnerships include NASA COTS (Commercial Orbital Transportation Services), which funded SpaceX to develop its Cargo Dragon spacecraft to resupply the ISS, and the Commercial Crew Program (CCP) that funded SpaceX for the development of their crewed Dragon 2 spacecraft. The commercial space panel ended with what effectively sounded like a handshake deal between the Vice President, the Secretary of Transportation, and the Director of the Office of Management and Budget to review current commercial spaceflight regulations and report the results of those reviews to the NSC in no more than 45 days.

New SpaceX Falcon Heavy launch hardware spotted at Cape Canaveral Visible modifications to LC-39A, SpaceX's operational launch facility at the Kennedy Space Center in Cape Canaveral, Florida are almost certainly being made in preparation for Falcon Heavy's inaugural flight, which Musk stated would "hopefully [launch] towards the end of this year". While verging on esoteric, the modifications that were made to LC-39A so far have focused on the Transporter/Erector/Launcher (TEL), a massive white structure tasked with carrying Falcon 9 to and from the pad itself for static fires and launches. There are two shiny new launch clamps, which are fittingly tasked with clamping hold of Falcon 9 and Falcon Heavy. This enables SpaceX to both conduct its relatively unique static fires, and also gives the Falcon family the ability to abort launches after all main engines have ignited. Whereas Falcon 9 only requires four clamps, Falcon Heavy will need a total of eight clamps. Conveniently, the structure upon which the clamps are installed was designed from the start to be somewhat modular. This will allow SpaceX to more easily swap out launch clamp inserts and switch back and forth between Falcon Heavy and Falcon 9 launches.

Tesla delivers record 26,150 vehicles in Q3, only 220 Model 3 sedans Tesla confirmed today its third quarter 2017 delivery numbers and the automaker delivered a record number of vehicles, including a few Model 3 sedans for the first time. The automaker had previously guided over 23,000 Model S and Model X deliveries during the third quarter and it significantly beat the guidance with 14,065 Model S sedans and 11,865 Model X SUVs. It represents a 4.5% increase quarter-over-quarter and 17.7% increase over the same period last year. As for Model 3, Tesla confirmed slow production of only 260 units: "Model 3 production was less than anticipated due to production bottlenecks. Although the vast majority of manufacturing subsystems at both our California car plant and our Nevada Gigafactory are able to operate at high rate, a handful have taken longer to activate than expected. It is important to emphasize that there are no fundamental issues with the Model 3 production or supply chain. We understand what needs to be fixed and we are confident of addressing the manufacturing bottleneck issues in the near-term."

Is this our first glimpse of the Tesla semi truck? On reddit, a user posted a photo which we can't quite confirm the source of, but is reportedly from "an undisclosed place in California where they test Tesla vehicles."  While we can't see any logos or other confirmation that this is the actual Tesla truck, it certainly looks like it – the headlights and fenders match up, the nose looks like it doesn't have an engine in it, and the angle of the windshield looks similar to the teaser photo. The truck in the photo does look slightly different than the teaser, in that the real-world photo seems to be lacking height. However, on the left side of the photo there's a large silver object sitting on the ground. It looks like this might be one of those "aerodynamic shrouds," intended to be placed on top of the tractor to reduce drag from the trailer. Since the tractor is not currently towing a trailer in the photo (and in fact is being towed itself), it makes sense that the shroud would be off in this instance.

Tesla Supercharger network reaches 1,000 stations worldwide and ~7,000 chargers Tesla's Supercharger network just reached a new milestone today: 1,000 Supercharger stations worldwide. The milestone was achieved by opening a new Supercharger station in Franklin Park near Pittsburgh in Pennsylvania today. It became the 1,000th Tesla Supercharger location in the world with a total of 6,934 Supercharger stalls. It was also the 226th new station that Tesla brought online this year alone, which shows that they are growing the network rapidly. Tesla started out the year with an average of 6.6 Superchargers per station and now it's up to 6.9 per station. The change is more obvious when only accounting for the stations installed this year, which have an average of 8.5 chargers per station. That average is expected to increase significantly before the end of the year as Tesla is currently building several stations with 20 or more stalls, even a few with 40 to 50 stalls.

Tesla buyers to have access to federal tax credit well into 2018 as US deliveries reach over 140,000 units One of the main concerns of some Tesla Model 3 reservation holders is the availability of the $7,500 federal tax credit that starts to phase out after Tesla hits 200,000 deliveries in the US. The first metric to estimate when Tesla is going to hit the phase-out period is the number of cars delivered in the US – something Tesla doesn't disclose since it doesn't break down deliveries by markets. Sources familiar with Tesla's North American sales confirmed that Tesla recently reached just over 140,000 cars delivered in the US. We expect 15,000 to 25,000 available federal tax credits to slip into Q1 2018. It means that they could hit the threshold during the first quarter or Tesla could (and should) time its 200,000th delivery right after the end of the first quarter since the way the phase-out period is set up, buyers still have access to the full credit for the current quarter and another full quarter – meaning they would still have access to the $7,500 credit in Q2 2018 and Q3 2018.

Tesla Model S P100D strips 500 pounds to set 1/4 mile record at 10.41 seconds Tesla drag racing fanatic behind the Tesla Racing Channel on YouTube has set a new 1/4 mile record in their stripped-down Model S P100D. The always-Ludicrous crew known to troll the streets for a good ol' fashioned head-to-head battle of acceleration has spent the past month dropping weight on their Model S. The end result was a weight reduction of nearly 500 lbs (220 kg) from its factory 4,941 lbs weight and a record-setting 1/4 mile blast at 10.41 seconds at 125.12 mph. This beats their previously held record at 10.44 seconds.

Tesla breaks delivery record in Norway – resulting in new lowest CO2 emissions ever for new vehicles By delivering over 1,000 cars during the last week of September, Tesla reached a record delivery month with a total of 2,004 vehicles delivered. Tesla had record Model X deliveries with 997 deliveries and Model S also had its best month in over a year with 1,007 units. They were the third and second best-selling vehicles in the country – only beaten by the VW Golf.

Tesla expands in Fremont with new office buildings for more than 1,000 employees Tesla has been expanding its Fremont factory over the last year to support its increasing vehicle production – especially the new Model 3 production, but the company is also in need of more office space as its Palo Alto headquarters are over occupied. Tesla has signed a lease and is now renovating 2 office buildings in the region. Tesla has leased 230,000 square feet of office space between two buildings at 6800 Dumbarton Circle and 6900 Dumbarton Circle in Fremont. One building has 116,000-square-foot of office space, which they estimate could accommodate 580 employees and the other building offer 113,000-square-foot of space, which could house roughly 570 employees. It's located near the Dumbarton Bridge between Tesla's Fremont factory and Tesla's headquarters, which are the automaker's two main locations in the Bay Area.

Elon Musk's Puerto Rico Energy Plan Just Got Governor's Support The governor of Puerto Rico has signalled his support for Elon Musk's plan to use solar to restore power to the hurricane-stricken island. On Friday, Governor Ricardo Rossello made plans over Twitter to speak with Elon Musk, describing the idea as potentially turning into the company's "flagship project." Just one day prior, Musk outlined an idea to restore power to the island, parts of which are expected to spend the next four to six months without energy after Hurricane Maria. "The Tesla team has done this for many smaller islands around the world, but there is no scalability limit, so it can be done for Puerto Rico too," Musk said on Twitter Thursday. "Such a decision would be in the hands of the PR govt, PUC, any commercial stakeholders and, most importantly, the people of PR."

Watch it here. "What this serves as is a great example for the rest of the world of what can be done," Musk said. "So when this is done, which will be in just a few months, it will be the largest battery installation, by an estimated power factor of three, in the world." The Powerpack opening event was powered entirely by the Powerpack system, giving attendees a taste of what was possible. "Talk is cheap, action is difficult. And the reason we worked as hard as we possibly could and got as much done as possible was to show that it's not just talk it's reality," Musk said. "Everything you see here, this whole event, everything, is powered by those packs," he said, pointing out the window at the battery facility. "There are no generators, this is all coming from that system over there. As you guys know, a year ago the situation was pretty dire … One tweet leads to another, and then pretty soon that," he said, pointing again to the Powerpack facility. For Musk and Tesla, the Hornsdale battery facility is the first step toward revolutionizing energy across the globe.

A hyperloop route between St. Louis and Kansas City is under serious consideration Missouri officials announced the formation of a public-private partnership to study the feasibility of building a hyperloop route between St. Louis and Kansas City. The study is being supported by Hyperloop One. The study is being conducted by a consortium of groups, including the Missouri Department of Transportation, the St. Louis Regional Chamber, the KC Tech Council, the University of Missouri System, and the Missouri Innovation Center in Columbia. St. Louis to Kansas City is a 248-mile route that takes around three hours and 40 minutes by car, or about 55 minutes by plane. Hyperloop One claims the trip would just take 31 minutes. Of course, that depends on building hundreds of miles of tubes, either above ground on pylons along a highway like I-70, or through underground tunnels. The Missouri study will explore all these options, as well the amount of state money that would be needed to build it.

Elon Musk Just Reviewed the 'Rick and Morty' Season Finale Elon Musk is a big fan of Rick and Morty, so it should come as no surprise that he has some opinions about Sunday's highly-anticipated season finale. Musk has previously described the show as "kinda disgusting," but admitted that he and his children "love it." So what did he make of "The Rickchurian Mortydate," the final episode of the third season? "Final episode was disgustingly good," he said on his Twitter page Thursday. "Thanks, E," the show's Twitter account responded. "Just riding this out until the singularity hits, you know?" "The singularity for this level of the simulation is coming soon," Musk said. "I wonder what the levels above us look like. Good chance they are less interesting and deeper levels are better. So far, even our primitive sims are often more entertaining than reality itself."

Elon Musk plans to put all of SpaceX's resources into its Mars rocket Elon Musk said he hopes to finance his plans to colonize Mars by making SpaceX's entire fleet of vehicles — the Falcon 9, the Falcon Heavy, and the Dragon spacecraft — obsolete. "All our resources will turn toward building BFR," Musk said. "And we believe we can do this with the revenue we receive from launching satellites and servicing the space station." Musk also announced he's planning to scale down the BFR, proposing 31 main engines this year. Last year at the same conference, Musk unveiled the combo rocket-and-spaceship's design, which included 42 main Raptor engines. Musk also proposed a variety of new uses for the scaled-down rocket beyond just going to Mars. Supposedly, the ITS can be used to launch satellites, take cargo to the International Space Station, and even do lunar missions to set up a Moon base. SpaceX's current Falcon 9 fleet is used to do a few of those things already, but Musk says eventually the company will turn to the ITS to do all of its space missions. Musk says the cost of launching cargo on the ITS will be fairly cheap, too, since the rocket and spaceship will be a fully reusable system — unlike the Falcon 9, which is only 70 to 80 percent reusable. Last year, Musk claimed the first crews would start flying to the Red Planet as early as 2024. This year, he said the first two cargo ITS ships will launch to Mars in 2022. That's just five years to create an entirely new rocket, send it to another planet, and land it on the surface intact.

Musk Wants to Build a Rocket That Will Get You Anywhere on Earth in an Hour Elon Musk is planning to build a new rocket ship code named "BFR" capable of traveling anywhere on Earth in under an hour. If the concept becomes reality, Musk said a journey from New York to Shanghai can be done in about 30 minutes. The surprise announcement means that SpaceX plans to ferry humans not just to distant planets but across this one as well, setting up a potentially competitive challenge to the commercial airline industry. "If we are going to places like Mars, why not Earth?" Musk said. Toward the end of Musk's presentation, animation played on a big screen behind him, showing scores of people getting on a high-speed ferry in New York, then boarding the BFR on a platform in the water. "Fly to most places on Earth in under 30 mins and anywhere in under 60," Musk wrote in an Instagram post after he'd left the stage without taking questions. "Cost per seat should be about the same as full fare economy in an aircraft. Forgot to mention that."

Elon Musk Named His Moonbase After Groovy Sci-Fi Classic "Space: 1999" SpaceX founder Elon Musk announced Friday that his space exploration plans now include not just Mars but also the moon. Speaking at the IAC in Adelaide, Australia, Musk revealed the company's planned next-generation rocket will make it possible to build a moon base. Musk's proposed name for the base is Moon Base Alpha, which is a reference to the 1970s British cult classic Space: 1999.

SpaceX will attempt Falcon 9 upper stage landings in 2018, says Shotwell In a presentation given at MIT, SpaceX COO Gwynne Shotwell revealed a considerable amount of exciting information. Shotwell confirmed that SpaceX is currently attempting to procure nuclear materials in order to conduct research and development of nuclear propulsion for spacecraft. Nuclear-powered methods of propulsion have the potential to drastically increase the efficiency of spacecraft once in orbit, with the primary benefit being faster travel times around the Solar System. Equally exciting, she stated that SpaceX plans to attempt the first soft landing of Falcon 9's upper stage before the end of 2018. Shotwell clarified that SpaceX would not attempt to reuse Falcon 9's upper stage, even if recovery efforts succeed. This suggests that SpaceX is planning to focus the majority of its research and development staff and capital on their considerably larger "BFR (Big Falcon Rocket) planetary colonizer" vehicle. Finally, Shotwell briefly discussed SpaceX's desire to create a vast constellation of Internet satellites around Earth, stating that their goal was "make scads of cash, spend it going to Mars, [and] give Mars broadband too!".

SpaceX's Plan to Girdle Earth With Satellites Hits Turbulence The U.S. Federal Communications Commission dealt the project a setback Tuesday with a decision that could force power reductions on SpaceX satellites, and potentially limit the spectrum they can use, making them less effective. The regulator on a 5-0 vote decided to defer in part to the International Telecommunication Union, an agency of the United Nations, on how these new satellite systems need to coordinate and share spectrum. The ITU works on a first-come, first-served basis, so operators that already secured spectrum for their constellations have priority when satellites inevitably line up with each other in space and their beams cross, threatening to cause interference. This means SpaceX will have to coordinate with rivals such as OneWeb and Telesat, which are closely held. OneWeb has priority in one band of spectrum outside the U.S., while Telesat has priority in another band in some parts of the world. This means SpaceX will have to restrict the power of its satellites' signals in some cases, and possibly limit the frequencies it uses.

Joe begins his in-depth Model 3 review video with a side-by-side size comparison of the vehicle against the larger Model S sedan and Model X SUV. The video then provides us with a good look at the removable Model 3 aero wheel covers and location for the vehicle's Autopilot cameras, before moving onto a wide angle look at Model 3's expansive glass roof, and beyond.

Tesla built a new Supercharger corridor in just 2 weeks ahead of giant Powerpack project launch Earlier this month, Tesla extended its planned Supercharger route in Australia all the way to its new giant Powerpack project. Surprisingly, Tesla already completed the route just in time for the launch of the project on Friday. There are a lot of things that need to come together for Tesla to bring a Supercharger online. They need to arrange for a location with the property owner, acquire a permit with the city, ship the hardware, which is built in California, hire a contractor to install the hardware, and arrange for a connection with the electric utility. We have seen projects stuck in the permitting or construction phases for months to even a year. But this new Supercharger corridor shows that when things are managed efficiently, Tesla can bring Superchargers online rather quickly. The 4 Supercharger stations between Melbourne and Tesla's Powerpack project north of Adelaide in South Australia were in the permitting and construction phases for just about two weeks before being brought online.

Tesla's "Design Your Model 3" invitation email expected to arrive soon As more Tesla employees and their family members are being invited to configure their Model 3, Tesla is gearing up to open their online design studio to non-employees in early October. Moreover, a source tells Teslarati that Model 3 production is ahead of forecasts and early reservation holders will soon be asked to configure their Model 3. A user from the Model 3 Owners Club forum and spouse of a Tesla employee posted the following screenshot of the "Design Your Model 3" invitation email they received. "Thank you for reserving a Model 3 and joining our mission to accelerate the world's transition to sustainable energy. It's time to choose your options and place your order," the invitation reads.

Tesla extends referral program to solar and Powerwall customers Model S and Model X owners are impacted by the new update and can now refer friends to purchase Tesla solar products. Likewise, Tesla solar customers can refer friends to purchase solar panels or a Model S/X with free unlimited Supercharging. The referral program update that incorporates Tesla's solar offerings will phase out SolarCity's referral program. The update is effective September 28, 2017. Additionally, for potential Model S and Model X buyers looking to capitalize on the instant $1,000 discount off the purchase vehicle price by using a Tesla referral code, that discount will be going away on October 31, 2017. Referral sales will still be eligible for free, unlimited Supercharging which is arguably the main appeal for using a referral code.

Tesla Model 3: how the keyless and phone entry works and user manual Tesla's new vehicle is using a phone-based unlocking system with a key card system as a backup. Now we obtained the company's FCC application for the system – giving us more insights into how it works. Tesla recommends bringing both your phone and key card when driving the Model 3. The user manual also says that Tesla provides two key cards per Model 3. If using the card to enter, the driver has to place the card within two inches under the camera on the driver's side door pillar. Once the driver has swiped the card, they have 15 seconds to press the brake pedal to power on the car, but they don't have to go back outside and swipe again if they wait longer. There's also another RFID transmitter in the center console. The driver simply has to place the card behind the cup holders for another 15-second authentication period. But using this system is not the most convenient way to unlock and start driving your Model 3. Tesla also explains how to use the card to authenticate your smartphone in order to use it instead of the card.

Tesla Model 3: first look at new dual computing platform Tesla developed for Autopilot and MCU As Tesla's cars have increasing computer power needs, the company is continuously looking to improve on those systems. Latest rumors suggested they are looking to design their own chips for Autopilot and moving to Intel for the infotainment system. Now we are able to confirm the exact computing solution that Tesla developed for Model 3. Tesla developed a fairly impressive custom liquid-cooled dual computing platform with both its Autopilot and infotainment computers built onto two different boards in the same module. On one side, there's the infotainment Electronic Control Unit (ECU) or MCU now powered by the Intel Gordon Peak BMP and Intel Apollo Lake system-on-chip instead of Nvidia's Tegra chip in Model S and Model X. And on the other side, there's the Autopilot ECU still powered by the Nvidia GPGPUs.

Tesla stops custom orders for RWD Model S and adds inventory cars Tesla updated its online design studio Sunday night to remove the single rear-wheel drive motor option for Model S. The move results in an increase in the base price of Tesla's flagship sedan to $74,500, which is $5,000 more than the now discontinued rear-wheel motor option. It results in several brand new Model S 75 vehicles being added to Tesla's inventory. Those vehicles are sold as "showroom floor models", but they are mostly new vehicles with very low mileage that have just been manufactured. The move appears to have something to do with better differentiating the base version of Model S with the new Model 3, which is now the only Tesla model offered with a single rear-wheel drive motor.

First look at Tesla's new 'most powerful battery system in the world' project in Australia Today, Tesla held an event to 'celebrate' their new giant Powerpack project in Australia. The company gave a first look at the project and confirmed that they signed the interconnection agreement with the local utility, which was the requirement to start the deadline for Elon Musk's bet to "deliver the project in 100 days or it's free." Tesla and Neoen, the wind power company operating the wind farm at the project, have now 100 days to complete the project after having signed the interconnection agreement with Electranet, which was approved by the utility authority. Several of the Powerpacks are already installed and operational since Tesla powered the event with the packs, but the battery installation is not completed yet.

Tesla Is Sending Battery Packs to Storm-Ravaged Puerto Rico Tesla is sending to Puerto Rico hundreds of its Powerwall battery systems that can be paired with solar panels in an effort to help the battered island territory restore electric power, the company said Thursday. Some of the systems are already there and others are en route. A single Tesla Powerpack battery saved this Australian town over $1.5 million in grid connection costs Logan City in south-east Queensland installed a solar power system on their new water disinfection plant, but they still needed a grid connection for when the sun is not shining. Instead, they installed a single Tesla Powerpack battery system to go off-grid. The system was so far from the grid that it would have cost them $1.9 million ($1.5 million USD) to get a connection. They didn't disclose how much they paid for the Powerpack and inverter, but it was quoted for around $100,000 before installation when Tesla used to have an online Powerpack project price calculator. That system combined with the solar installation is expected to power the water treatment facility 24 hours a day.

Tesla CEO Elon Musk sways Daimler to invest $11B in EV development Daimler AG, parent company to Mercedes-Benz, has responded to Elon Musk's tweet that the company was "off by a zero" when it pledged to invest $1 billion in growing its electric vehicle manufacturing footprint. The German-based automotive giant which reported $180 billion in revenue in 2016 confirmed that they have upped the ante and will invest at least $10 billion in development of next-generation electric vehicles and over $1 billion in battery production. Mercedes brand executive Markus Schäfer stated, "We are significantly growing our manufacturing footprint here in Alabama, while sending a clear message to our customers across the U.S. and around the world: Mercedes-Benz will continue to be on the cutting-edge of electric vehicle development and production."
